Alma Longley, 89, a resident of Oswego, passed away March 26, 2013 at St. Luke’s Health Services.
Born in Sterling, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Ethel (Groves) Irwin.
She was a member of the VFW #5885 Ladies Auxiliary and a former member of the Oswego Hospital Auxiliary and RSVP.
She was the Office Manager at Dr. Julius Weinreb DDS for over 50 years.
Over the years she knitted hats and mittens for the Salvation Army and Oswego Hospital for their use at Christmas time.
For many years she was known as the “Doll Lady” at the Oswego Hospital as she made dolls for all of the children that were having surgery.
Alma was the recipient of the “Simple Acts of Kindness Club” sponsored by the Oswego County Savings Bank and Palladium Times for her dedication to those who were less fortunate.
Surviving is one son, David (Judy) Longley; son-in-law, August Gentile Jr.; sister, Betty Cole; grandchildren, August (Kathleen) Gentile III, David (Colleen) Longley, and Jennifer Longley; great grand children, Austin Gentile and Aidan Longley.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Longley; daughter, Elizabeth Gentile; and eight brothers and sisters.
Calling hours will be from 2-4p.m. Friday, at Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany Street, Oswego, with a service to follow.
Spring burial will be in Sterling Center Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Luke’s Nursing Home and especially those who cared for Alma on the 7th Floor.
