Jean Cooney Rath, 82, of Oswego, passed on April 12, 2023.

Born in Canandaigua, New York, she was the daughter of the late John Owen, a WWI Marine Veteran and engineer by trade, and Genevieve Detler Cooney, homemaker.

Jean was a graduate of Oswego High School. She earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degree s from SUNY Oswego and was a certified teacher and school psychologist. Jean worked as a teacher, a clinical psychologist at Oswego County Mental Health Center, and as a school psychologist for most of her career in Central New York.

In retirement, she lived in Punta Gorda, Florida, Port St. Lucie, Florida, and returned to South w est Oswego for her last years.

Sailing was Jean's passion, and she kept her sailboat in Osweg o Marina. Jean loved to travel and enjoyed planning trips for her family. She also personally and professionally tirelessly supported individuals suffering from mental health issues.

Jean is survived by her sons Lisle F. Rath Jr. of San Jose, California, a nd Thomas K. Rath of Punta Gorda, Florida ; her granddaughter, Tamara E. Rath, also of Punta Gorda, Florida; several nieces and nephews ; and her former husband Lisle F. Rath Sr.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her brothers, John an d Richard Cooney.

Per Jean's request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
